The Okefenokee Swamp Park (OSP) first opened its doors in 1946 at the northern entrance of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge and has since welcomed millions of visitors from around the world. Seated primarily within Dixon Memorial State Forest just south of Waycross, Georgia, the park offers a rare and captivating glimpse into one of the most iconic and ecologically significant wetlands in North America.

Okefenokee Swamp Park offers interpretive boat tours along ancient waterways, strolls through wilderness boardwalks, encounters with ambassador animals, and a walk back through time on Pioneer Island. These experiences are designed to inspire curiosity and deepen connections to nature, history, and conservation. Operating as a nonprofit organization under a long-term lease, OSP Inc. does not receive federal or state funding. Instead, it thrives through visitor engagement, donor support, and community partnerships, all vital to its mission of education, stewardship, and public access.

Visitor Experiences

See what our guests have to say about their experiences at the Okefenokee Swamp Park.

Amazing to visit the largest black water swamp in the world! The boat tour was incredible and we saw an alligator! The guides were very knowledgeable and it felt like traversing through a haunted fairytale. Definitely recommend a visit.

Brandon Mauer – March 2025

Such a lovely park, we went when the alligators were sleeping but there wasn’t a shortage of other wildlife to view such as the turkey vultures, reptile encounters, and the “inhina”. Our boat tour guide Hailey(?)was amazing! So knowledgeable and pleasant. 10/10, am coming back in the summer. Expect to spend a bit of money if you want to take part in all of the events like the boat ride, train ride, reptile encounter, etc..

Carol Nicolas – February 2025

Did it all… boat ride (if you only do one thing do this) train ride and animal show. The boat ride was my favorite saw 3 wild alligators (one 6fter) a lot of turtles, birds, and squirrels. There are several alligators in closed off areas because they are rescues that have been human fed and you can see them up close by way of walkway above. Overall was a great way to spend a day! Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable.

James Wellington – February 2025

The staff are really knowledgeable and have a passion for the swamp! The boat tour was our favorite part, seeing the wildlife. We also enjoyed the animal exhibition where we got to pet the reptiles and learn about them. The train tour was a wealth of information in regards to the history of the swamp and gave historical context. A fantastic day and a must see!

Samantha Johnson – January 2025

Okefenokee wildlife

The unique ecosystems within the Okefenokee are home to a rich diversity of wildlife. Its blackwater swamps, cypress forests, and prairies provide a haven for over 200 species of birds, including sandhill cranes, egrets, and red-shouldered hawks. The swamp is also a vital habitat for American alligators, river otters, bobcats, and the threatened red-cockaded woodpecker. Aquatic life flourishes in the swamp’s slow-moving waters, with numerous species of fish, frogs, and reptiles, including various turtles and snakes. The Okefenokee’s complex food web and relatively undisturbed environment make it a critical refuge for both common and rare species, underscoring its importance for biodiversity conservation in the Southeastern United States.
